Gary “The Arena Guy” shared behind-the-scenes stories of some upcoming stars performing at Nationwide Arena and The Schottenstein Center on the ABC/FOX morning program “Good Day Columbus” on December 17.
The Arena Guy talked about superstars Barry Manilow (March 1 at Nationwide Arena), Neil Diamond (March 18 at the Schottenstein Center) and Taylor Swift (September 17 and 18 at Nationwide Arena). A four-pack of tickets to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra, December 28 at Nationwide Arena, were given away to a viewer.
71-year old Manilow is embarking on what he says will be his final tour, called “One Last Time,” which will also feature Grammy-winning saxophonist Dave Koz as his opening act. Manilow, who holds the record for most Top 40 Adult Contemporary hits with 50, also became the only artist in music history to be nominated for a Grammy Award for five consecutive decades. His CD “Night Songs,” which features his take on some of the greatest standards of all-time, was nominated this year in the Best Traditional Pop category. The Arena Guy discusses the enthusiasm of Barry’s fan clubs in decorating his dressing room, and how he felt about being neighbors with former President Ronald Reagan.
Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Neil Diamond was also discussed. His March 18 concert at the Schottenstein Center will be his fifth visit to the arena after he opened the building on November 8, 1998. The Arena Guy discussed what renovation Diamond requested…before the building even hosted their first show!
Taylor Swift, recently named by Barbara Walters as one of her ‘Most Fascinating People of 2014,’ was also mentioned on the show. Her phenomenal recent success has even surpassed her impressive, record-breaking previous work. Her debut single from her “1989” album, “Shake It Off” immediately became a worldwide smash, hitting #1 in 64 countries! The album sold more than 1.3 million copies in its first week, an unheard of feat in this age of singles downloads. Taylor Swift will appear in Columbus for the third time, for two shows September 17 and 18 at Nationwide Arena. The Arena Guy shared some anecdotes of her first two shows, including her parents reaction to her initial success and her love of Jeni’s Ice Cream!
